 Marengo was built in Dutch Bend, Autauga County, Alabama, by Dr. Charter Campbell Howard.  He married in 1848 and by 1854 Dr. Howard was desirous of improving his lot in life as well as his medical practice.  He moved to Lowndesboro bringing his wife, his children and his house!  Each brick and board was dismantled, numbered, placed on rafts and floated across the Alabama River.  The material was moved by oxcart to the present site and reassembled.  The family stayed in Lowndesboro for 23 years.  The house sold to Dr. Charles Edwin Reese in 1877 and the Howards returned to Autauga County.  The Reese family named the house "Jasmine" and it remained in this family until 1926 when it was purchased by Lindsay James Powell, Sr.  He renamed the house Marengo for his wife's home county.  The original architecture was a simple raised cottage featuring a wide central hall with rooms on each side and a narrow porch across the front.  In 1960 Lindsay J. Powell, Jr. accomplished extensive remodeling making Marengo the
picturesque mansion it is today.

December 18, 1975, William J. and Florence S. Cabaniss of Birmingham gave Marengo to the Lowndesboro Landmarks Foundation.  Through the years various tenants have provided
catering services for Lowndesboro and surrounding communities. This antebellum home has been the setting for such social occasions as elegant high teas, formal seated dinners, unforgettable weddings, memorable class reunions and delightful Easter Egg hunts.  

November 10, 2010, Lowndesboro Landmarks Foundation deeded Marengo to the Town of Lowndesboro.  Lowndesboro Landmarks Foundation serves as the acting agent for the operation of Marengo. For information and reservations call Town Hall at 334-278-3434 or

March 1, 2011, Lowndesboro Town Hall moved to the ground floor of Marengo.

purpose of fostering, encouraging, and leading the preservation movement in the Town of Lowndesboro and the surrounding area.
